There are many benefits of cleaning. It reduces allergens, cuts down on germs, hey maybe even you can burn some calories in there? But, I don’t think we talk enough about what cleaning does for our mental health.

Personally, when I walk into a clean and decluttered home, it automatically reduces my stress and anxiety from the day. I feel happy and a little more at peace knowing a part of my world (for now) is less chaotic.

The Anxiety and Depression Association of America even indicates that the physical activity of cleaning coupled with the end result of a cleaner home helps reduce stress, feelings of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Pretty neat, hey?

Let’s be clear, in no way are we saying cleaning cures mental health disorders, but it could be way for you to practice mindfulness and to feel more at ease during your day.

We all struggle to find the time to clean, let’s be real, even our cleaners don’t have spotless homes. However, there are some ways you can help incorporate cleaning into your lifestyle:

  1. Set a timer - set aside 15-30 minutes of cleaning time a day. Maybe when the little ones are finally sound asleep or during the commercials of your nightly Netflix binge? Find a way to schedule a mini clean in your day. Your future self will thank you for it.

  3. Involve others - whether it’s family or friends or hey, even the Lemon & Pine team, don’t be afraid to ask for help in those busy times when you can’t keep up. Just because you may feel like your drowning, doesn’t mean your home needs to be.
