guide to getting out stains
From nosebleeds to baby puke, if you don’t know how to treat stains, you can end up throwing items away or living with uncared garments. In this blog, we’ve listed some ways to get out even the toughest stains.
So, read below and you won’t have to stress next time you spill that glass of red wine, or your pen explodes on your shirt!
IN A PINCH?
When it comes to any and all stains, it is important to treat the spot as soon as possible. You want to do this before the stain has a chance to set.. we suggest blotting the stain rather than rubbing it. Blotting pulls the stain out of the fabric, whereas rubbing pushes the stain deeper.
Great to have on hand! The easiest and best overall stain remover for most fabrics and stains is a 50-50 mix of white vinegar and water. Make up a spray bottle of this mixture to have on hand for quick emergencies. Always do a test patch on the garment to ensure you won’t damage the fabric.
We also love stain removal sticks. A few of our favourites are the Nellies Wow Stick, The Bare Home Stain Stick and coming soon…Mama Bare Naturals stain removal bar.
GUIDE TO STAINS
Coffee - soak in a solution of vinegar, dish soap and cold water for 30 mins and then wash.
Furniture - vinegar and dish soap spray onto the stain and then blot
Blood or Rust - use a wet clean white cloth and dab on hydrogen peroxide. hydrogen peroxide has a bleaching effect without the destructive colour change. It is colour safe and also disinfects (test a small patch).
Grass - vinegar and water spray, soak
Makeup - dish soap and water blot with cloth
Wine and Grease - blot stain with a clean towel and then put peroxide, dish soap, and water soak for 30 mins or spray the solution on and blot.
Greasy Food- scrub water and dish soap into the stain, sit for a couple of hours, and then wash in hot water.
Sweat Stains - homemade stain remover paste (see recipe below).
Homemade Stain Remover :
1 teaspoon of blue Dawn® dish soap
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide
Make this paste and rub on and let sit for a couple hours or overnight then wash in regular cycle
Something to remember. Check the label and see what kind of fabric and temperature of water the item should be washed in. Stain treatment usually recommends cold/lukewarm water, not hot, and always hang to dry.. don’t put it in the dryer unless the stain is completely gone. The dryer will set the stain and make it permanent.
